A guide to great music released in 2022, organized by moods…
Where are we now (cont.)? From our experience, falling in love with a new record is sometimes all about the right setting and mood. With so much stellar new music being released throughout the year, at times it can be tough to figure out which new release to listen to and when. Scouring lists can be overwhelming. Certain suggestions, while well curated, might not be the best fit for your current listening needs. That new experimental electronic album may be the wrong headspace after a long day; a dance track might not sound quite right on headphones at your desk; or you just need to hear some songs with lyrics and a voice, etc.
So, inspired by Chee Shimizu’sObscure Sound disc guide, we’ve decided to organize our year-end retrospective list by broader moods rather than genres or styles. This list includes every single new release we’ve featured on the site over the past year. By organizing it in this way, we hope the music can be more easily digestible and explored. Below, a guide to each of the moods:
Home Listening: Soothing music you can easily fall into anytime, anywhere. Feels like home.
Deep Listening: Requires your full attention. Close your eyes. Hear more, say less.
Pensive: Sounds for reflection. Songs with words. Cry-friendly.
Mellow: Light, groove-based music. Head bobbing. Mostly instrumental, some voices and machines.
Chill-out: Introspective electronic music with beats, but not always.
Dance: Self-explanatory. Get up and move! Music for the dancefloor. DJ-friendly.
For easy access, we’ve embedded the Bandcamp player for each release. If you’d like to read/learn more about a record, feel free to use the search tool to find the write-ups in either a feature, Now Sound list, or record collection entry. Thanks again to everyone who has followed along and read the features on the site this year! Big news incoming in 2023 <3
Note: If the Bandcamp players don’t load immediately, please wait a minute or two (there are more than 100 releases here).
