5 Selects: Bianca Lexis (Los Angeles)
LA favorite Bianca Lexis picks 5 personal favorites from In Sheep Clothing’s online record collection.
Longtime friend of In Sheep’s Clothing, Bianca Lexis is easily one of our favorite DJs in Los Angeles. Equally adept at crafting memorable moments on the radio as she is at moving dance floors around Los Angeles at A Club Called Rhonda, Homage’s Nightmoves, and various late-night parties, Bianca shares her depth and versatility as a selector through her genre-bending sets that are rooted in the synthesizers, drum machines, and forlorn vocals of ’80s synth-pop and new wave along with the infectious basslines, melodies, and grooves of boogie, house, and italo. We’ve been tuning in to her radio shows for the past eight years now on dublab (Happy Hour) and NTS Radio (Panorama Heaven), and have been turned on to so many great tracks that have become all-time listens. A recent favorite: this unbelievable instrumental cover of Dionne Warwick’s “Walk On By” from British producer Richard X featuring The Flying Lizards’ Deborah Evans’, heard on Bianca’s Covers Special.
Linked to a global community of like-minded DJ’s, artists, labels, and promoters, Bianca has also released mixes on Music from Memory, Dekmantel, Stamp the Wax, Nina Protocol, and Libramix. For an introduction to both sides of Bianca’s selection, we recommend: her 2021 Music from Memory mix which weaves together forgotten treasures from around the world including tracks from Spanish minimal composer Pep Llopis, Californian musician Rick Cuevas, Prince collaborator Ingrid Chavez, German post-punk outfit Die Fische, and Toronto art rock band Martha & the Muffins; her recent mix for Mood Hut’s cult favorite Libramix series showcases her eclectic, but incredibly fun dancefloor selections opening with a pair of Afro-Italian cosmic dance jams (including one called “Punani Fantasy”) into the “Even Deeper Remix” of Chicago deep house legend Larry Heard’s “What About This Love?”
This Saturday, Bianca will be playing a sunset set on the rooftop of ROW DTLA for our Summer of Sound hi-fi & wine experience in collaboration with dublab, Bar Part Time, In Sheep’s Clothing Records, and Crap Eyewear. Limited tickets are available now via dice: https://link.dice.fm/Jef2fd0e9b43
In anticipation of Summer of Sound, Bianca selected 5 of her personal favorite records from In Sheep’s Clothing’s online record collection. Listen to her picks below along with write-ups.
Insides – Darling Effect (1993)
This is one of my favorite records ever. No skips. I’ve probably played every song on this album on my NTS show at least once. I still remember the first time I heard it – I was floored. Shout out to Brian and Xander for putting it on in the car in nyc…
Bark Psychosis – Big Shot (1994)
In love with this track. It’s hypnotic, mysterious, looming, but then there’s a shift towards the end that feels hopeful. Stunning every time. Reminds me of later Talk Talk records.
Pilgrims of the Mind – La Belle Du Jardin (1997)
Another no skip album. Each song really takes the listener on a journey. Great one to listen to on a road trip.
Hysterical Love Project – Ionian Sea (2023)
One of my fav albums of last year. Another one I’m sure everyone’s tired of me playing on my show haha. Really good downtempo/trip hop/shoegaze album put out by local LA label Motion Ward, which has so many other fantastic releases.
AR Kane – Cool As Moons (1994)
I’ve known about AR Kane for ages but I just recently heard this tune off of their last record. too beautiful for words. They have a way with genre blending that just feels so effortless.
