5 Selects w/ Gripbuster (Toronto)
South African kwaito, bhangra, dancehall, Nigerian digi-roots, and more from Toronto’s Gripbuster, Kool Ty.
Gripbuster is an online record shop run by Toronto’s Kool Ty, one half of the DJ / CEO duo Modern Art. Specializing in obscure ’90s and ’00s dance 45’s from Toronto, Jamaica, the Caribbean, and beyond, the shop operates in a blink-and-you-missed-it “online drop” style format that’s intensely competitive, but absolutely worth it for the one-of-a-kind finds that Ty digs up from who knows where… Dancehall, r&b, bhangra, calypso, rapso, soca, hip-house, instrumental g-rap, oddball covers and much more; the sounds can probably best be described as, “unbelievable, baby!”
This Saturday, January 21st 12-6pm Gripbuster will be joining us at the shop for a popup record sale with the equally deep Crates LA. Hundreds of rare, obscure, private press LP’s, 12’s, and 45’s will be available. To keep you going, Good Boy Wine will also be pouring complementary drinks!
In anticipation of the record sale, Kool Ty has sent over a selection of music that will be available for sale this Saturday. Check below for some South African kwaito, UK bhangra, Jamaican dancehall, Nigerian digi-roots, and “acid souse.” All five of these selections are not available to listen to anywhere else and they’ve been uploaded to Google Drive for preview purposes…
Be sure to follow Gripbuster on Instagram to be notified of their next record drop. You can also listen to previews of all the incredible music they put up for sale: https://www.instagram.com/gggripbusterrr/ Check this mix below:
