5 Selects w/ Ura (Motion Ward)
Deep cut anime and video game soundtrack selections from Motion Ward’s Ura.
Los Angeles-based experimental electronic label Motion Ward continues to be on a roll, albeit at a slow, subaquatic sort of pace… The label’s only release this year outside of an incredibly promising digital-only track from Hysterical Love Project, Baby With A Halo by Montreal-based producer Ura is a masterclass exercise in ambient post-club abstractions and emotional VST atmospherics. Fully blunted, the album’s eight tracks have loose reference points to various contemporary genres including techno, drill, and trap, but the sounds and grooves have all been processed, mangled, and dubbed out to wisps of beautifully fragmented noise.
There’s a deeply cinematic quality to the full listen, and while the approach might point to a sort of computer-generated dystopian feeling, there’s actually quite a bit of warmth and hope that comes across here, especially in the blissful title track “Baby With A Halo” (named after the emoji?). As usual with Motion Ward releases, the album is accompanied by a vague but perfectly vibe-setting line of text:
“new life from the faint ash of reminiscence”
If you enjoyed the album, we also highly recommend checking out Ura’s previous releases on Canadian labels Collect-Call and Adam Feingold and Priori’s NAFF.
Don’t miss Ura performing live alongside Ulla, AshTreJinkins, and JS (DJ) this Thursday at ISC HQ for our Motion Ward showcase. It’ll be the last show of the year at our headquarters…

As a celebration of the album release and teaser for the show this Thursday, Ura shared five anime & video game soundtrack selections with us along with a bonus deep cut from the artist formerly known as Jeffery aka Young Thug…
The Seatbelts – Hamduche
From the Cowboy Bebop Soundtrack, perfect winter music.
Asa-Chang & Junray – Hana
Such a beautiful composition, I always come back to it. I think this song is based on the theme from the anime/manga Aku-No-Hana.
Ghost in the Shell OST – Floating Museum
I need to re-watch this movie.
Junji Ishiwatari & Yoshinori Sunahara & Etsuko Yakushimaru – Kami Sama no lu Tori
From the surreal anime Tatami Galaxy.
Tatsuhiko Asano – In the Wake of Doshin the Giant
This is from the game Doshin the Giant on Gamecube.
Bonus Selection:
Young Thug – Ashin the Blunt
This song is always stuck in my head ever since I found through DJ Shrimp C.
