Merry cosxmes to all those who celebrate!

It’s that time of year again… That’s right — another cosxmes mix has been uploaded! In certain circles, “cosxmes” is the best holiday gift every year from Tokyo-based duo cos/mes aka 5ive and Flatic, who are best known internationally for their sample-heavy “sadistic” house productions for labels like ESP Institute, Snaker, and Ene Records. Don’t expect Christmas songs here, it’s all about the vibe, love, and warmth of the holidays that the duo capture so perfectly in these mixes.

Featuring everything from ambient to exotica and jazz fusion to lovers rock, the mixes showcases a skill that only the best of “selectors” can achieve: being able to convey a specific mood or aesthetic without playing any songs that directly or obviously relate to that theme. Stylistically, it’s easy to point to cos/mes’ hip-hop and r&b influences (the duo came were part of the Tokyo underground hip-hop scene alongside artists like Kenji Takimi and Force of Nature) that are sprinkled throughout these mixes, but it’s also clear that the duo’s tastes expand well beyond that and contemporary music as well. Over the years, we’ve discovered countless gems through these mixes including tracks from Sweetback, Junior Boys, Soft Location, and U.C. Redd.
