5 Selects: Altın Gün (Turkish Psychedelic)
Join us on February 17th at Darling’s hi-fi lounge for an exclusive first-listen of Altın Gün’s upcoming album Garip.
Some of the most psychedelic grooves ever recorded, Anatolian rock emerged in the mid-60s as Beatlemania dominated global airwaves and Jimi Hendrix’s innovative wah-wah guitar playing influenced a new generation of musicians in Turkey. Artists like Selda Bağcan, Barış Manço, and Erkin Koray electrified their traditional instruments developing a new form of Arabesque rock rooted in protest and left-wing political themes. The sound has in recent years developed a global following with numerous archival and compilation projects on Finders Keepers, Uzelli, and Guerssen.
Since 2018, Amsterdam-based Altın Gün have been at the forefront of the 21st century revival of Turkish-influenced psychedelic grooves. Their latest album, Garip, dives even deeper into their Anatolian influences, and features ten compositions by the legendary Turkish folk bard Neşet Ertaş. A beloved icon of Anatolian music, Neşet Ertaş was a virtuoso of the bağlama, the most well-known Turkish instrument. On Garip, Altın Gün have reimagined Ertaş’ iconic compositions with synthesizers and their singular contemporary psychedelia.
Next week, In Sheep’s Clothing is organizing a series of listening events at some of our favorite rooms around the world in collaboration with ATO Records and Altın Gün:

Below, a selection of Anatolian psychedelic favorites from Altın Gün’s founder Jasper Verhulst.
Selda – Ince Ince (1976)
Selda Bağcan’s 1976 album was my introduction to the world of Turkish psychedelic folk rock. This is an absolute fuzz rock banger. Written by Mahzuni Şerif, another legendary aşık folk singer.
Ağrı Dağı Efsanesi – Deli Gönül Neylersin (1972)
High energy psych pop with an amazing organ solo.
Özdemir Erdoğan – Gurbet (1972)
A beautiful groovy shuffle song about being homesick. We tried to play it once with the band but this Özdemir Erdoğan’s version is so perfect that in the end we didn’t dare to touch it.
Zafer Dilek – Hey Onbeşli (1976)
This guy was a very succesfull and producer and guitarist that recorded many hits in Turkiye in the 70’s. This groovy instrumental is one of my go to songs when I play music for a dancefloor. Always works.
Kamuran Akkor – Ikimiz Bir Fidaniz (1975)
Very successful singer that recorded many hits. This is one of my favorites by her and a very sought after 7″
