Techno City: What Is Detroit Techno? (2000)
Join us April 3rd for a celebration of Detroit techno at Agora Records featuring listening sessions of classic albums along with a DJ set from Detroit legend Santiago Salazar.
Earlier this month, comedian-turned-DJ Zack Fox announced a monumental collaboration with Detroit techno pioneer DJ Bone. Fox, who was previously known for his work in hip-hop with artists like Kenny Beats, Thundercat, and Flying Lotus, has over the past few years become part of a crucial new generation of DJ’s and artists championing Black electronic music. Per the announcement, Bone shared, “This is more than just a series of back-to-back sets, it’s about creating a link between generations and, crucially, emphasising that the origins of Techno are in the Black artists of Detroit.”
The collaboration received universal praise (including love from DJ Godfather) and highlights one of the greater movements currently within electronic dance music: younger listeners and DJ’s are starting to go back to the Black roots of the music in cities like Detroit, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, and Baltimore.
Next month, we’ll be presenting a celebration of Detroit techno alongside our friends at Agora Records. Friday, April 3rd: Cosmic Movement celebrates the legacy of Detroit techno from The Belleville Three (Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson), Underground Resistance, and second-wave artists like K-HAND, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, Carl Craig and Drexciya. The listening session will be followed by a DJ set by Detroit legend Santiago Salazar (Underground Resistance, Planet E, Los Hermanos) who will be playing a special Detroit-only set on vinyl with hi-fi club sound by Mobius Acoustics.
Tickets are available now via dice.fm. Don’t miss!

Below, watch a crucial documentary on Detroit Techno uploaded by Third Ear Recordings. First aired on TV in 2000, the film documents the origins of the music in Motown, George Clinton, Kraftwerk, The Electrifying Mojo, and the collapse of the city’s automotive industry with interviews from Detroit luminaries Carl Craig, Derrick May, and Kenny Larkin.
“Detroit Techno. The definitive Techno music. Revered abroad. Ignored at home. Until now. In the year 2000, nearly fifteen years after the first pioneering recordings, the city of Detroit held its first electronic music festival. This film is a celebration of the Detroit sound. Welcome to Techno City.”
