“The story of IDM in the USA begins in Miami.” A seminal left-field electro classic, Tone Capsule is the debut album from Soul Oddity aka Phoenecia, a duo made up of Miami natives Joshua Kay and Romulo Del Castillo. Inspired by the foundational IDM emerging from Warp’s Artificial Intelligence camp, Kay and Castillo pioneered their own style of left-field electronica infused with their local tropical sounds of sub-rattling Miami bass, hip-hop, and breaks. Much slower in tempo than the electro emerging from Detroit, the tracks here are dripping with humid electro-funk and constantly mutating synthesizer lines that draw some comparison to Aphex Twin’s funkier moments.
