Blue – Mexican Church
Released on Andrew Weatherall’s Emissions Audio Output, Mexican Church by Cambridge duo Blue is an extremely slept on experimental electronic dub album from the mid-90’s. Much like their contemporaries Bandulu (who Weatherall was also a big fan of), Blue fuses hip-hop sampling techniques with dub processing, techno dancefloor sensibilities, and a punk rock approach for a sort of dark psychedelic electronic sound that fans of DJ Krush, Coil, Beaumont Hannant, and On-U Sound will enjoy. As the title suggests, the album has all the drama and intensity of a religious sermon or a film score with synth pads and ominous strings descending upon tripped out breakbeats and sub-heavy basslines. Much like Seefeel’s debut album Quique, there’s a rawness here that we really enjoy with most of the tracks comprised of only a few elements (possibly recorded on an 8-track?).
