Legendary French musical couple Brigitte Fontaine and Areski Belkacem’s first album together Comme À La Radio is a masterpiece of avant-garde jazz uniquely bringing together French chanson with the American free-form jazz of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago. Areski’s innovative African and European traditional percussion lay the foundation for most of these compositions with Fontaine’s soft-sung/spoken vocals and free-verse poetry dancing and gliding alongside the upright bass, woodwinds, and brass of the Art Ensemble. Wadada Leo Smith’s trumpet and Roscoe Mitchell’s flute play off each other beautifully sometimes doubling melodies, while at other times freely improvising together. “Lettre A Monsieur Le Chef De Gare De La Tour De Carol” closes out the album on a more traditional French chanson featuring cello and guitar.
