Cocteau Twins – Head Over Heels
The Cocteau Twins’ sophomore album, Head Over Heels was conceived while the band was essentially homeless and staying at a friend’s house for about a year. “Foolishly, John Wilde and Scott Roger had said, well, if you really need somewhere to stay, just come along at any old time and we’ll put you up and all that stuff. But I think they meant a weekend, and it turned out to be about a year…. There was a lot going on in that house. It was a really good atmosphere, really productive.” The album marks a turning point in the Cocteau’s sound when Elizabeth Fraser’s began to move away from conventional lyrically-driven singing into the abstract “mouth music” that she became known for. “Fraser’s voice became just as much an instrument as those played by her musicians,” including Guthrie’s “multi-layered and heavily reverberated guitars.”
