Curtis Mayfield – Roots
Released in the same year and in a similar echelon of visionary, conscious soul music as Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, Roots is the somewhat underrated second solo album by The Impressions’ Curtis Mayfield. While not as hard-hitting and funky as Superfly, Roots holds up to the best Curtis albums with sophisticated lyrics, anthemic arrangements, and sweet melodies. “Keep on Keeping On” continues the work done on “Move On Up,” “We Got to Have Peace” urges the world to “save the children,” while “Now You’re Gone” shares a rare side of heartbreak from Mayfield.
