A favorite of our good friend Justin Gage of Aquarium Drunkard, Cycles is the second solo album by cellist David Darling on Manfred Eicher’s seminal ECM Records. With support from greats Colin Walcott on sitar, tabla, and percussion, Steve Kuhn on piano, Jan Garbarek on saxophone, Arild Anderson on upright bass, and Oscar Castro-Neves on guitar, Darling crafts a vast and imaginative sound-world that sits somewhere between contemporary classical, jazz, folk, and world music. Both cavernous and filled with light, the music floats with that classic crystalline ECM sound where silence and space infinitely magnify the beauty of each chord, melody, and note.
