Devon Rexi – Biya Ba Man
Another favorite release of 2024, Biya Ba Man is the debut mini-album from Devon Rexi, an Amsterdam-based post-punk / no wave group featuring Nicola Niggebrugge aka Nicolini (drums + vocals), Lyckle De Jong (synthesizers + effects), and Nushin Naini (bass + vocals). Inspired by trailblazing labels like On-U Sound and Celluloid Records, the trio mash together their myriad influences through live instrumentation featuring heavy percussion and sub-rattling bass guitar, tripped-out electronics, alongside bizarre, but incredibly infectious farsi singing. The energy this trio emits feels almost nitrous-fueled and the resulting sound is unlike anything we’ve heard; maybe “otherworldly” fits though that descriptor feels a bit like a cop out… Anyway, there’s a fully experimental punk attitude present here, but, most importantly, the tracks also groove deeply!! Looking forward to more from this group and the South of North camp as a whole.
