Tibor Szemző – Snapshot From The Island

Deeply imaginative electronic renditions of Satie from Mitsuto Suzuki, a Japanese composer / synth operator who is known for his work on video game soundtracks. Opener “Gymnopédie # 1 – Universe” features Brazilian musicians Silvio Anastacio, who Suzuki apparently hired after hearing him sing at a Mexican restaurant in Japan, along with percussionist Marco Bosco. The track is a unique blend of downtempo electronic grooves with bossa nova and Satie’s beautifully simplistic “Nude Dance” melody. “La Lune” is another favorite and takes a more abstract approach to capturing the essence of Satie through a French spoken word and a field recording from pedestrian bridge in Shibuya late at night. Highly recommended for fans of Susumu Yokota, Rei Harakami, Aphex Twin, Music from Memory’s Virtual Dreams II, and Warp Records’ Artificial Intelligence.
