Elvin Jones – Genesis
One of the most influential drummers in the modern jazz tradition, Elvin Jones is known for being a key member of John Coltrane’s legendary ’60s quartet, which released A Love Supreme, My Favorite Things, Ascension, and Live at Birdland, alongside bassist Jimmy Garrison and pianist McCoy Tyner. After leaving Coltrane’s group in the late ’60s, Jones would record extensively for Blue Note under his own name. Released in 1971, Genesis is a spacey post-bop classic featuring a piano-less quintet with three saxophonists Frank Foster, Dave Liebman, and Joe Farrell. Foster’s silky smooth alto flute soars on opener “P.P. Phoenix” while Jones’ virtuosity and polyrhythmic drum style propels the dreamy “Slumber.” The saxophones trade off belting solos on closer “Cecilia Is Love.”
