Spacemen 3 – Recurring

Osaka-based experimental band goat is one of those rare acts that have crafted a sound that is uniquely their own. Pure rhythm & sound, the group’s compositions develop through pulsing polyrhythmic ideas generated from the interplay between guitar, bass, drums and saxophone. Each instrument generates its own unique percussive sound by exploring extended timbres through muting, effects, and harmonics, largely avoiding melodies and standard harmonies. While the music can and has been loosely tagged as “experimental math rock,” the grooves here still have a certain sense of soul (albeit maybe slightly deranged) within them, and you can easily find yourself moving to the rhythms. Perhaps a better comparison than “math rock” might be the interlocking patterns of gamelan music or even the deeply polyrhythmic Senegalese mbalax music that Mark Ernestus has been exploring with Ndagga.
