Pelican Daughters – It’s time my friend…

Released in 2024 on Relaxin Records, an imprint run by Alina Astrova aka Lolina, light decline is the sophomore outing from mysterious London artist great area (an Instagram page exists with zero posts). If you’re familiar with the extended world of Inga Copeland, Hype Williams, Dean Blunt, etc., then you’ll recognize a similarly minimalistic and lo-fi approach to songwriting here with the songs largely built using manipulated samples and bass guitar. You might describe it as DIY, but “unbothered” might be the best description of this music as the songs seem to be put together in a fast and totally honest, almost diary-like way. It’s hard to describe what sets them apart from other indie electronic music as it’s more or less the same formula of outdated drum machine beats and vocals, but great area is clearly touching on something – perhaps a sort of generational apathy – with their music by “doing nothing apart from whatever I want.” Recommended for fans of Broadcast, Sarah Records, Hydroplane, HTRK or Carla Dal Forno.
