Jack J – Blue Desert
A certified sophisti-pop future classic, Jack J’s second full-length as a singer-songwriter turns up the crystalline blue melancholy with nostalgia-inducing ’80s early digital production and support from Suzanne Kraft, Pender Street Steppers partner-in-crime Liam Butler, songwriter Aiden Ayers, and saxophonist Linda Fox. “Wrong Again” opens the album with a deft reminder to Jack’s dance music roots, recalling downtempo balearic pop classics with that iconic organ keyboard bass. The following tracks vary from more ambient numbers (Red Cloud) to indie chuggers (At My Door). Much like Opening the Door, Jack’s songwriting here draws from a well of introspection diving into foolish mistakes, lost loves, desire, broken dreams, and youth. Our favorite of the bunch “Falling Down a Well” hits on a dreamy psychedelic rock sweet spot with layers of harmonized vocals a la Crosby, Stills & Nash or the Beach Boys & Brian Wilson. As always, Jack leaves us with earmworm melodies and that nylon string guitar will probably be with us for months/years to come…
