Kazufumi Kodama & Undefined – 2 Years / 2 Years In Silence
Legendary Japanese trumpet player Kazufumi Kodama meets Undefined aka Kazuhiro Sahara (keyboards) & Ohkuma (Drums) on the pandemic dub album 2 Years / 2 Years In Silence. The album is essentially the fully fleshed out version of the pairing’s widely loved 2018 10-inch EP New Culture Days with the sound of the album landing somewhere between Rhythm and Sound and Mute Beat with ambient dub chords, deep sub bass, and minimal drum grooves backing Kodama’s powerful melodic trumpet. Side A features the original versions with drums while Side B is completely beat-less and more of an ambient dub direction with plenty of space and spring reverb. The title track “2 Years” is probably our favorite composition out of the bunch. The original has a nice off-kilter dub chord bounce that sets in nicely underneath Kodama’s soaring trumpet while the ambient version moves along at a slow, subterranean pace grounded by a pulsing sub bass. Highly recommended for fans of Bill Laswell’s Ambient Translations in Dub!
