Maple Fyshh – You Are Leaving My Mind: The “Mariko” and “Dokitto Station!!” Era
A collection of late ’80s/early ’90s recordings of introspective Japanese dream pop self-produced and recorded by outsider artist Maple Fyshh in his home studio in Miyazaki, Kyushu (Japan’s southern island facing the Pacific). Apparently inspired by Phil Spector and Joe Meek, as well as hot rod and surf music, the songwriting here attempts to replicate a sort of seaside ’60s American pop sound, but the spectral reverb, crunchy 4-track cassette recording, and wall-of-sound inspired production levitates these tracks into an ethereal territory. “君がどんどん離れて行く(リプライズ) (You are Leaving My Mind [Reprise]),” in particular, is an immensely beautiful little campfire type song that lingers in your memory long after the 2-and-three-quarter minutes are over.
