Krautrock legend Michael Rother (Kraftwerk, Harmonia, Neu!) presents a collection of minimalistic guitar and synth-based compositions on his fourth solo album Fernwärme, which is the German word for the heating system that warms your home. As the title suggests, Fernwärme is one of Rother’s most intimate works; it was recorded and produced by Rother himself at his own Flammende Herzen Studio in Forst, and his first without longtime producer Conny Plank. Rother is joined by drummer Jaki Liebezeit of Can on a few tracks including the beautiful opener “Silberstreif” (Silver Streak). Liebezeit brings the classic motorik beat to a light jog here while Rother plays simplistic, but highly addictive melodies over a 16th note bass chug. Like some of the best krautrock, the tracks are deeply trance-inducing and predicts coming age of electronic music.
