Mikey Dread – Dread At the Control Dubwise
Upbeat, heavyweight dubs from Mikey Dread aka Michael Campbell, who began his musical career as a DJ and audio engineer at the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation. Campbell first made a name for himself through his show “Dread at the Control,” which was one of the first radio shows to play exclusively reggae, before finding his way to produce for Lee “Scratch” Perry and Joe Gibbs among others. Recorded at Channel One Studios, Dread At the Control Dubwise is a bonafide classic from the golden age of dub featuring Sly & Robbie, Augustus Pablo, Earl “Chinna” Smith, Gladstone Anderson, and others. Perhaps drawing inspiration from the mad genius “Scratch,” Dread includes various strange samples throughout the album including animal sounds, water drops, church bells, and other sounds pulled from sci-fi and horror films. Alongside the samples, the album is also iconic for its radio-style intro tags (International Field Marshall, Master Mantrol, Props Man Style, etc.) that have been sampled on numerous records throughout the decades.
