Originally released in 1965 as Musique Classique Algérienne – Stikhbar, Istikhbars and Improvisations is a collection of solo piano music from Algerian legend Mustapha Skandrani. Istikhbars are traditional Algerian vocal pieces which have roots in the Islamic Arabo-Andalusian culture which flourished in Spain. Skandrani’s unique musical sense led him to play these Algerian modal compositions on the piano, the quintessential European instrument, and in doing so transcended the borders of musical cultures to create a remarkable trans-Mediterranean crossover sound. Highly recommended for fans of Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, Dominique Lawalrée, Goldberg Variations, Bach and Glenn Gould.
