Oren Ambarchi / Johan Berthling / Andreas Werliin – Ghosted

In 2022, Australian experimental guitarist Oren Ambarchi teamed with musicians Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin for an immersive album of percussion and guitar. Ghosted features four numerically titled instrumental tracks (“I,” “II,” “III,” “IV”) that move with subtle-but-fierce undercurrents. Ambarchi, Berthling and Werliin share a fascination with rhythm and the myriad of ways it can subdivide within the beat. Using aspects of jazz, world and experimental musics, each tune settles into a deep groove, digging itself via continuous minimal adjustments into an ever-deeper, eternal groove. Interestingly, “I” features Swedish reed player Christer Bothén, who played in Bengt Berger’s Bitter Funeral Beer Band that released one of our favorite ECM records in 1982, on the Ngoni [Donso N’goni] for a sort of avant-garde organic music.
