Oro Azul – Water Seeds

Oro Azul is a new project from Vancouver-based electronic musicians Michael Red and Ultima Esuna. While both are new to the Mood Hut label, Red has been a longtime fixture in the Vancouver underground music scene while Ultima Esuna is part of a new generation of artists who have been influenced by the label’s legendary parties and are pushing the music forward with new sounds. Water Seeds takes the dubwise electronic sound of Mood Hut’s latest club-oriented releases into liquid forest dembow territory. Intricate organic percussion and pan-flute samples meet bird and insect sounds that could be field recordings, but are more likely masterfully crafted using synthesis. Amazingly, the dembow riddim, which is typically a more aggressive sound, takes on a sort of calming property when matched with Oro Azul’s smooth sub-bass and atmospheric sound design. Ultima Esuna’s vocals, which are often panned and blended deep into the mix, create a sense of mystery of some lost or imagined world.
