Another brilliant release from Glasgow-based experimental electronic label 12th Isle, Pataphysical’s Periphera is an immersive, ambient journey into cosmic highs and subterranean lows. Quite minimal in approach, the album’s 8 tracks of sprawling ambient landscapes are composed primarily of just a few layers of synthesizer textures, field recordings, and subtle sub-bass programming. It makes sense that the group is known for their live psychoacoustic experiences as the tracks have a seriously immersive quality to them. Just listen to B4 Energen with its pulsing synth drones that slowly increase and decrease in frequency, creating a strangely pleasant sensation that feels akin to an aural massage (try it with headphones). As always with 12th Isle releases, the album’s artwork is a wonder itself and a perfect psychedelic complement to the music. Don’t miss!
