Art Blakey!!!!! Jazz Messengers!!!!!

Long before she became an R&B singer, the Los Angeles-born jazz pianist Patrice Rushen was cutting up electric jazz records on Prestige with synthesizers, clavinet, electric piano. The followup to her debut album Prelusion, Before the Dawn expands Rushen’s palette into deeper fusion territory R&B, pop, rock, and funk elements incorporated into her sound. Much like her first record, this album features a monster assemblage of Fantasy jazz players like Hubert Laws, Lee Ritenour, Hadley Caliman, and Harvey Mason. In many ways, the album can be seen as a transitionary album as it showed signs of Rushen’s later R&B style, especially “What’s the Story,” which featured singer Josie James.
