R.N.A. Organism – R.N.A.O Meets P.O.P.O
Produced by Kaoru Sato of legendary Japanese no-wave band EP-4, R.N.A.O Meets P.O.P.O is a stunning late ’70s private press oddity from Yuzuru Agi’s legendary Osaka-based label Vanity Records. A renowned music journalist, Agi is credited for first coining the term “techno-pop,” which he used to describe Eno-produced bands like Talking Heads and DEVO, and later became internationally known via Yellow Magic Orchestra. R.N.A.O Meets P.O.P.O is hard to describe… Rhythm boxes are slammed through distortion and spring reverb, while children’s voices accompany twisted public service announcements and alien vocoders. Guitars are certainly present here, with some tracks leaning towards a no wave sound, but then a dubwise attitude suddenly appears in the form of melodica and space echo. There’s also a connection to minimal synth and industrial in the way that abstract textures and noise are used propel the music forward. Whatever it is, it comes highly recommended for fans of Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Bruce Gilbert, Suicide, Psychic TV, etc.
