Released in 1985 on The Specials’ Ghost Town’s producer John Collins’ Local Records imprint, Love with A Stranger is a cult classic early street soul jam released when Loose Ends was just starting to break through. Rick Clarke was a part of one-off UK disco/boogie groups Potion and Side On before going solo. The groups’ lone singles “Catch The Feelin’ (Showstopper)” and “Magic” are both collectible and sought after DJ cuts featuring bass-heavy grooves and ecstasy-laced vocals from Clarke. “Love with A Stranger” pulls the tempo back a bit for a smooth cruiser with Clarke layering vocals and harmonizing with himself for a fully lush vocal sound that perfectly complements the icy cold electronic production. Don’t miss the dub mix on side B, which cuts the lead vocal to emphasize Clarke’s harmonies while adding a bit of digi-echo magic and a synthesizer solo.
