Gil Scott Heron / Brian Jackson – Winter in America

Mexico’s first fusion band, Sacbé (white road in the Mayan culture) was formed by three brothers Eugenio (keyboards), Enrique (electric bass) & Fernando Toussaint (drums) and sax player Alejandro Campos. The group initially performed jazz standards, but quickly moved into the “new genre” aka fusion, which was becoming popular around the world, covering artists like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, Return to Forever, and Milton Nascimento. Not content to stop there, the group would slowly introduce their own compositions into the repertoire until their set featured entirely original material. Sacbé’s 1977 self-titled debut album sounds something like a Mexican Azymuth featuring a fusion of latin percussion rhythms, progressive arrangements, improvisation, along with synthesizers.
