Tibor Szemző – Snapshot From The Island

The spiritual continuation of Jeff Parker’s Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy, Small Medium Large is the debut album from SML, a new LA-based quintet featuring luminaries from Los Angeles’s thriving improvised music scene: bassist Anna Butterss (Jason Isbell, Phoebe Bridgers, Makaya McCraven, Daniel Villarreal), synthesist Jeremiah Chiu (Ariel Kalma, Marta Sofia Honer, Icy Demons), saxophonist Josh Johnson (Meshell Ndegeocello, Leon Bridges, Carlos Niño), percussionist Booker Stardrum (Amirtha Kidambi, Lisel, Lee Ranaldo, Patrick Shiroishi) and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann (Sam Wilkes, Meg Duffy, Perfume Genius). Recorded live over two separate nights at Highland Park’s lost experimental music venue ETA, the album recalls Teo Macero’s legendary post-recording editing/chopping/re-arranging techniques used on classic Miles Davis electric period albums (On The Corner, Bitches Brew and Live Evil). The sound of the album lies somewhere between krautrock and free jazz with Chiu’s modular synthesizer wizardry providing a foundation for the instrumentalists’ to groove and improvise.
