Smokey Robinson – A Quiet Storm
A landmark album that inspired an entire musical programming format and genre, Smokey Robinson’s A Quiet Storm was a return to form for the influential Motown songwriter and ex-Miracles singer. Lead single “Baby That’s Backatcha” reached number one on the Billboard charts and was Robinson’s first hit after leaving The Miracles. The songs here are smooth, sophisticated, and romantic, much like the Quiet Storm late night radio format that was popularized in the late 70’s by Washington D.C. disc jockey Melvin Lindsey. We especially love the classy little synthesizer line on the title track that gently glides over Smokey’s vocals and emerges for a perfectly placed solo three quarters of the way into the track. “You’re just like a quiet storm / Blowin’ through my life.”
