Recorded on an island off the coast of Queensland, Australia, Hayman Island Sessions is a spiritual set of long-form improvisations featuring the Chinese guzheng, a 16-string zither that was typically used in traditional court and folk music in ancient China. “There Are Many Moods Of Tropical Exultation” captures a twilight duo setting with plenty of room noise alongside the guzheng’s mystical twang. 22-minutes long, the piece flows into a deep droning as the harmonics of the two stringed instruments blend together into one. “Stand For The Rush” is a wonderful clash of sounds with pummeling drum machine percussion meeting dub chords that echo out like wisps of smoke while the guzheng adds a sharp twang to the mostly muted textures. “These Waves All Look The Same (Gun Street Girl Revisited)” brings vocals into the fold for a sort of ambient folk where filtered guitar frequencies are processed into room and chest rattling sub.
