The Golden Palominos – Pure
Led by drummer Anton Fier of Pere Ubu and The Lounge Lizards, The Golden Palominos were a revolving-door type project featuring a dynamic cast of punk legends, post-punk superstars, up-and-comers, and N.Y.C.-scene experimentalists including bassist Bill Laswell, guitarists Arto Lindsay and Fred Frith, and saxophonist John Zorn (among others). The group’s 1994 album Pure, which featured vocalist Lori Carson, has become something of a sleeper trip-hop cult classic over the years, along with the accompanying remixes from Terre Thaemlitz, aka DJ Sprinkles and Bandulu. Perhaps the Golden Palominos’ most pop-leaning effort, Carson’s crystalline vocals and whispered spoken word soar above Laswell’s thundering dub basslines, while Fier’s live breakbeats, drum programming, and percussion inject the tracks with the perfect amount of esoteric flavor. As expected with a Golden Palominos record, there’s a surprise guest here, and this time it’s Parliament Funkadelic’s Bootsy Collins on rhythm guitar!
