Famously sampled by J Dilla on his masterpiece Donuts, Maybe is the debut album from Philly female vocal group The Three Degrees (a trio comprised of Fayette Pinkney, Sheila Ferguson, Valerie Holiday). The title track features an outstanding arrangement of a doo-wop standard that opens with an extended soulful spoken word before dropping into a impassioned vocal performance from Valerie Holiday. You can really feel every word Holiday is speaking / singing and it’s as if she’s reaching out directly to your soul. “Their voices have the unique quality of stripping away the unnecessary fluff and getting to the very essence of the matter.”
