Various Artists – Wanna Buy a Bridge? A Rough Trade Collection of Singles
In 1980, the British label Rough Trade opened a Stateside satellite office in San Francisco and, as a way of introduction, curated a 14-song collection of the label’s highlights. More than 40 years later, the tracks they picked are some of the most essential Brit-punk and post-punk singles of the era. The Slits remixed by a young Adrian Sherwood. The Raincoats’ yowling “In Love.” The Television Personalities’ indictment of lukewarm posers, “Part-Time Punks.” Swede-punk trio Kleenex’s (aka Liliput) three-minute exclamation point “Ain’t You.” Cabaret Voltaire’s electro-punk anthem “Nag Nag Nag.” Robert Wyatt gem “At Last I Am Free.” Add in Delta 5, Essential Logic, the Pop Group, and more, and the result is a riveting listen from start to finish — and an inexpensive way to snag a lot of great singles on vinyl in one fell swoop. – Randall
