John Haycock – Dorian Portrait

Wunder (= miracle, wonder) was a one-off project by electronic musician Jörg Follert, also known as Saucer/Wechsel Garland/Mimsy. The project’s 1998 release for Cologne-based label Karaoke Kalk is a cinematic sample-based electronic beauty drawing from jazz, bossa nova, psychedelic pop, and more. Follert masterfully blurs the line between samples and live re-interpretations by using a combination of sung, played, synthesized, and sampled passages. The album has often been compared to a film in the way that each scene is built up with strings and Wurlitzer piano painting a sort of whimsical sound palette. Follert’s cover of “Aquarela do Brasil” is especially beautiful with a soft-spoken delivery that sounds as if it was recorded from a distance through a telephone. Opener “Look Out For Yourself” is also great contrasting distorted drum machine beats with a celestial harp gorgeous swing jazz vocals.
