Yu Ching – The Crystal Hum

Spectral vocals and spring reverb’d guitars meet old drum machines and cheap Casio keyboards on Taiwanese artist Yu Ching’s debut on Glasgow-based independent label Night School. Inspired by lo-fi experimenters like The Space Lady, Arthur Russell, and Suicide, Yu Ching takes a minimalistic approach to composition with bass grounding most of these tender love songs (sung in both Mandarin and English) while the other elements swirl around the scene through effects processing. “The soundtrack to getting lost in the labyrinthine, closed streets of Venice, Taipei, Hong Kong, or mirror versions of them in the imagination.” Highly recommended for fans of Les Rallizes Denudes, Alex Zhang Hungtai, Cindy Lee, Slowdive, Young Marble Giants.
