dublab & Descanso Gardens present: Tonalism ( in space )
An ambient music exhibit featuring spatial audio works by Morton Subotnick, Patrick Gleeson, Craig Leon, Suzanne Ciani, and others.
Dublab’s long-running Tonalism series is making it’s way to the amazing Descanso Gardens in La Cañada! Starting Thursday, June 9th through Sunday, June 12th visitors will be able to experience a quadraphonic sound exhibit among the oaks and roses in daytime and nighttime experiences along with a special live happening on June 11th featuring music performances, DJ sets, video art, and installations.
For newcomers, Tonalism is dublab’s beloved all-night ambient happening partly inspired by La Monte Young’s Dream House and the happenings of the 50s and 60s by artists such as Terry Riley, John Cage and Yoko Ono. Started in 2006, the event has been presented in art centers and historic spaces in Los Angeles and around the world such as Pehrspace, Farmlab (Metabolic Studios), Santa Monica Pier, Henry Miller Library, Reed College, Music Gallery in Toronto, and Bonnaroo Festival among others.
The exhibit will take place during regular visiting hours (it is included with admission to Descanso Gardens) and will include pre-recorded works by various artists that will play on rotation through a specially designed sound system that will allow the public to immerse in a sonic experience while enjoying their surroundings.
The exhibit will feature works by Richard Fearless, Morton Subotnick, Geneva Skeen, Patrick Gleeson, Craig Leon, and Suzanne Ciani among others. The Tonalism exhibit will also offer the Centering Center: a dedicated area to stay, listen to the sounds, join together in community, walk out into the environment with an inner strength that comes from pausing, from reflecting. The area will include commissioned work by the musician Ki Oni, plus various workshops and activities.
On Saturday, June 11, Tonalism will go live! From 6pm to 1am the public will be able to enjoy live performances, DJ sets and video art in the Rose Garden. Visitors are encouraged to bring pillows, cushions, and sleeping bags to lay down, listen and watch for an extended period of time.
