City Pop Night with Kapsoul and Tsugu
City pop classics and rarities selected by Kapsoul and Tsugu.
Japan’s financial boom in the late 1960’s birthed a new sound that ruled Japan through the ‘80s and came to “epitomize the country’s contemporary psyche… mirroring Japan’s punch-drunk prosperity.” A reflection of Western soft rock, soul, and boogie, City Pop would provide the soundtrack for not only Japanese urbanites in the ‘80s but also internet youth around the world. In 2019, Light in the Attic released the now-classic Pacific Breeze compilation when the music seemed to have reached an all time high in international popularity.
Interestingly, it’s been over two years since then and City Pop mania continues on, with recent trends appearing on Tik Tok. To dive deeper into the sound, we’ve invited two of our favorite local Japanese music specialists to share classics & rarities from their deep collections. Join our good friends Kapsoul and Tsugu for a night of city pop featuring Tatsuro Yamashita, Anri, Toshiki Kadomatsu, Taeko Ohnuki, and many more!
