Wandering Spirits: Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi and Beyond

ISC hosts a night of dedicated listening sessions featuring Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi.
Herbie Hancock’s electronics-heavy free jazz group Mwandishi has in recent years attained almost mythical status in the jazz world. The trilogy of albums they released in the early 70’s have become prized possessions among collectors, and many fans cite the group as one of their favourite ensembles. Musicians including Pat Metheny, Bobby McFerrin, and members of King Crimson all credit Mwandishi as a major influence on their work, and last November Jazz United’s Nate Chinen and Greg Bryant dedicated an entire episode of their podcast to the group.
“To me, that band was the epitome of everything that jazz has ever promised to be. Collectively and individually, they brought together a sound that was so deeply in and of that moment in time that it became thus transcendent and timeless. They inspired me and a generation to aspire to their level of creativity and commitment.” – Pat Metheny
Join us for dedicated listening sessions of Mwandishi, Crossings and Sextant along with selections from the group’s individual members and side projects.
