Listening with Sam Wilkes – SOLD OUT
Sam Wilkes joins us for a dedicated listening session featuring his favorite album sides.
Los Angeles-based composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Sam Wilkes makes fluid, meditative jazz filled with ambient and even psychedelic textures. A frequent collaborator of saxophonist Sam Gendel and eclectic singer/songwriter Louis Cole, he made his solo debut with the 2018 full-length simply titled Wilkes. Wilkes and Gendel’s Music for Saxofone & Bass Guitar is one of our favorite recent albums from LA-based artists and is featured in the ISC record collection.
“A future classic from two rising stars of the LA jazz/electronic scene. Music for Saxofone & Bass Guitar was originally self-released as a limited white label in 2018 and has only just recently seen a wider release (500 copies) on beloved LA electronic label Leaving Records, a sub-label of the legendary Stones Throw. The music here is loose and improvised with each musician employing a range of pedals and electronics to push the boundaries of their instruments and lift their combined textures to astral dimensions…”
While primarily known for playing bass, Wilkes is also an incredible record selector and hosts “The Sam Wilkes Radio Hour” on NTS. Expect an eclectic mix of sounds ranging from soul and soft rock to jazz and new age.
