Watch: John Carroll ‘Kirby’s Gold’ with Gamelan musician Putu Septa (Bali)
John Carroll Kirby continues to expand the world of his Huell Howser-inspired travelogue series.
John Carroll Kirby has been keeping busy this past year. Since we hosted him at our headquarters last November, the LA-based pianist, composer, multi-instrumentalist has released a new album with Eddie Chacon, a solo record, and traveled the world a couple times over playing in Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, China, New Zealand, and all across Europe.
If you haven’t already, we highly recommend checking out Kirby’s latest album, Blowout, on Stones Throw Records. A perfect fit for the legendary hip-hop label that continues to release groundbreaking new music, Blowout brings more latin and Brazilian rhythms into John’s jazz-infused, electronic keyboard funk resulting in a sound that’s something like a modern reincarnation of a crate digger ’80s fusion classic. Listen below:
Kirby has also somehow managed to continue his Huell Howser California’s Gold inspired video travelogue series, but I guess the touring has actually helped with that side of things. The latest two episodes have seen Kirby expand the show from a “Los Angeles travelogue” to an international one featuring musicians from Costa Rica and Indonesia.
Check the latest episode with musician Putu Septa, who is known for his contemporary take on traditional Balinese composing. The episode includes a 6-minute long jam with John on an electric keyboard and Septa’s Gamelan Orchestra.
