Podcasts We Love: The Strangeness of Dub

Join Edward George on a journey into reggae, dub, and versions that draws on critical theory, social history, cross-genre musical selection, and live dub mixing.
Followers of this site might remember our feature on Afrofuturist documentary The Last Angel of History by British artist, writer, theorist John Akomfrah and researcher Edward George. The ground-breaking 1996 film explored the relationship between Pan-African culture, electronic music, intergalactic travel, and computer technology through a semi-fictional narrative centered around a “data thief” on an archaeological dig.
In 2019, Edward George returned with another brilliant project, this time focusing on dub music and its influence across electronic music and culture. Presented on Morley College London’s community radio station, The Strangeness of Dub tells the stories of dub pioneers like Clement Dodd, Sylvan Morris, Lee Perry, King Tubby, Scientist, Jah Shaka and The Mad Professor, while also diving into the social context of the music within themes of diaspora and race, history and memory, longing and loss.
The series flows brilliantly through topics including the cultural significance of The Abyssinians’s iconic “Satta Massagana,” Margarita Mahfood and nyabinghi drumming, Rock Against Racism, black consciousness, dub techno, and much more while weaving in fantastic selections of music, sometimes in a dub-mix style. Even better, George lists all the tracks played in each episode!
