Orchestre Paillote – Volume 1 LP
Original pressing! A landmark in modern Guinean music, Orchestre Paillote Volume 1 was released during a time of change in Guinean music when Sekou Toure came to power and said ‘if you can’t play the music of one’s own country then one should stop playing altogether.” Led by the great Traoré Kélétigui, the music here is a gorgeous fusion of Guinean traditional music, Cuban grooves, and jazz featuring latin percussion, brass harmonies, and electric guitar.
Released in 1967, Orchestre Paillote later become known as Keletigui et ses Tambourinis. Beautiful, tranquil melodies and vocals weave in and out of 60s African jazzy rhythms with Latin and Caribbean influences making their way back to the motherland.
