Little Forest: Yu Su’s Organic Soundscapes

Born in Kaifeng, a city in central China’s Henan province, Yu Su first discovered electronic music through the Pender Street Steppers’ legendary Mood Hut basement parties in Vancouver. Since then, the DJ, composer, and sound artist has put out releases for Washington D.C.’s Peoples Potential Unlimited, Amsterdam’s Music from Memory, the Hague-based Wichelroede, Ninja Tune sub-label Technicolor, and her own bié Records, crafting a singular electronic sound that blends her organic musicality with a keen ear for experimental sound design. Her tracks lie somewhere between environmental music, ambient dub, fourth world downtempo, and left-field house with an underlying melodic influence from Chinese traditional and pop music flowing through her entire discography.
Over the years, Su has also shown herself to be quite the collaborator, bringing her unique sense of composition to projects with multi-disciplinary artist Duval Timothy, singer-songwriter Aiden Ayers, and LA-based artist John Carroll Kirby on his 2022 Dance Ancestral album, which also featured bassist Daniel Aged and ambient pioneer Laraaji. In recent years, Su has expanded her artistic practice beyond music to include “Polyphonic Eating Experiences” where she cooks multi-course meals accompanied by original compositions. Her recent pop-up at Spacetalk London came with this note: “A synthesis of taste, texture, tone, disprofumo, aroma, frequency, light and shadow. Attuning all senses to the present, we invite you to experience a polyphonic meal. How deeply can you be in tune with your surroundings?”
This Friday, Yu Su will be debut her live “Ambientale” performance — blending ambient, experimental & dub influences into a cohesive and immersive soundscape — at our intimate outdoor space at In Sheep’s Clothing HQ in West Hollywood. The night will include opening and closing DJ sets from the team behind In Sheep’s Clothing.
