London indie dance band Saint Etienne’s biggest hit, “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” is a downtempo cover of Neil Young fusing club culture, indie guitar pop and a near-scholarly love of 1960s girl-group melodrama. Saint Etienne band member recalls the conception of the tune that ignited the indie dance revolution: “It felt like you could do something between [indie and dance] — house and techno production and an indie record over the top. It wasn’t really being done at that point, and soon after there was an avalanche of it.” This 12-edition features remixes from club luminaries including a Masters At Work Dub and Kenlou B-Boy Mix. Interestingly, this release doesn’t actually include Andrew Weatherall’s “A Mix Of Two Halves,” even though the credits say otherwise. Regardless, these are some of the best club-oriented remix of Saint Etienne’s melancholic Summer of Love classic.
