Before going solo as Enya, Eithne Ni Bhraonain briefly played in her family’s band, Clannad, who were pioneers in mixing traditional Celtic instruments and Gaelic vocals with folk, rock, new age, and pop. A deeply musical family raised by their music teacher mother and working saxophonist father, Clannad cut their teeth performing at their family-owned Leo’s Tavern, playing a mix of traditional songs that had been sung in living rooms and bars for centuries, and songs by contemporary artists such as Joni Mitchell, and The Beatles. Clannad’s only album featuring Enya, Fuaim features digital keyboards and electric guitar interacting seamlessly with harp, flute, and mandolin.
