The AB’s debut album is a collection of soulful fusion jazz that’s often looped in with other “city pop” releases on Moon Records, but transcends many of the tropes of the genre. Guitarist Makoto Matsushita leads the group here with his signature balearic-tinged sunset vocals and shimmering guitar. The arrangements are sophisticated and while the sounds are extremely fusion, there are few moments where a solo or riff comes off forced. Check the opening track “Deja Vu” which has a gorgeous vocal melody that reminds us a bit of Ned Doheny, and the closer “Just You” which hits that ’80s yearning vocal plus fretless bass combination perfectly and ranks up there with the best fusion city pop.
